DQ checks out the upcoming schedules to pick 10 new series to watch this April, from a French home-invasion thriller and a Dutch royal drama to Colin Farrell playing investigator and a new take on Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley.

Ripley

Written and directed by Steven Zaillian, this show is based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr Ripley, which was previously adapted as a 1999 film starring Matt Damon. The Netflix series centres on Tom Ripley (Scott), a grifter who is scraping by in early 1960s New York when he is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.

Sugar

As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he also unearths Siegel family secrets – some recent and others long buried.

Homejacking

This thriller focuses on wealthy couple Isabelle and Richard Deloye, who live in a magnificent house built in the middle of the countryside. When an armed man with a pink balaclava and a jerrycan full of petrol enters their home and holds them hostage, it’s not clear what his motives or intentions are. After the couple overpower their attacker, they believe their nightmare is over – but the worst is yet to come.

Two-hundred years after the apocalypse, in a world split between the haves and have-nots, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind – and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them.

This show, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in LA, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.

This six-part mystery-thriller, created and written by Toby Whithouse (Being Human), combines a police investigation with folk horror as a detective delves into an island’s eerie past devotion to a pagan god called the Red King and the cult of the True Way. Smart, capable and by-the-book Grace Narayan (Mohindra) was flying high as an inner-city police sergeant before being forced to take up a post on the island of St Jory. When she’s confronted by the unsolved case of a missing teenager, she must overcome scarce evidence, extraordinary local characters and the island’s history to uncover the truth.
