FIRST LOOK: Meet Geek Girl, the central character in the upcoming series based on Holly Smale’s YA novels of the same name. It debuts on Canada’s StackTV and in the rest of the world on Netflix on May 30.

The coming-of-age story introduces awkward teenager Harriet Manners whose life is turned upside down when she is spotted to be a model and embarks on a life-affirming journey of self-discovery as she balances high school and high fashion.

Harriet has spent her life trying to be invisible, to blend in seamlessly, but there’s no denying, she’s a geek. Her whole world changes after she catches the eye of a modelling agent while on a school trip to London Fashion Week. Tightly wound agents, reclusive designers, impossibly high heels, and a handsome young supermodel with a great smile — socially awkward Harriet has no idea what she’s in for.

Emily Carey (House of The Dragon) stars as Harriet, while the cast also includes Emmanuel Imani (Riches) as Wilbur Evans, Sarah Parish (Industry) as Jude Paignton, Liam Woodrum (Love In Zion National) as Nick Park, Tim Downie (Outlander) as Richard Manners, Zac Looker (A Kind of Spark) as Toby Pilgrim, Jemima Rooper (Flowers in the Attic: The Origin) as Annabel Manners, Sandra Yi Sencindiver (Foundation) as Yuji Lee, Daisy Jelley (London Kills) as Poppy Hepple-Cartwright and Rochelle Harrington as Natalie Grey.

The adaptation was co-created for television by Jessica Ruston and Holly Smale, and further episodes were written by Sameera Steward and Sarah Morgan, with
additional material by Zoë Rocha and Georgie Armour.

The series is directed by Declan O’Dwyer (Miss Scarlet & The Duke). The show is produced by Zoë Rocha for RubyRock Pictures (UK) and by Anthony Leo and Andrew Rosen for Aircraft Pictures (Canada). Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana is distributing the series internationally.
