Beginning in 1940, the six-part series will embrace the royal family for better or worse, on the palace’s polished floors and as they face political dilemmas, but first and foremost tell the story of the girl who was born a princess – and becomes heir to the throne as a young teenager in 1953.

Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Josefin Asplund star as King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, Kirsten Lehfeldt as Queen Alexandrine and Henrik Larsen as King Christian X, while Margrethe is played by several different child actors.

The ensemble also features Marie Reuther, Marco Ilsø, Christine Albeck Børge, Anders Heinrichsen, Andreas Jebro, Peter Zandersen, Flemming Enevold, Thure Lindhardt, Johan Olsen, Klaus Bondam and more.

Margrethe is developed from an idea by Søren Sveistrup. Thor Bjørn Krebs is the main writer and Mogens Hagedorn is the conceptual director. The series is produced by SAM Production in collaboration with Ahil Films with support from the Public Service Fund, Nordisk Film & TV Fond and MEDIA.
