FIRST LOOK: Tamara Lawrance takes the title lead in Get Millie Black, a crime noir series based on Marlon James’s novel of the same name. It will debut on HBO on November 25 and on Channel 4 in 2025.

Produced by Motive Pictures (The Woman in The Wall), the “vivid, unflinching and gripping” five-parter stars Lawrance as the inimitable Millie-Jean Black, a police detective who quits Scotland Yard to return home to Jamaica, where she is soon pursuing a missing persons case that threatens to expose more than she may be willing to confront.

Showing a deeply personal and wholly authentic version of Kingston, the story is told through the unique perspective of Millie – a girl born on the Rock, raised in London, who claims to be both British and Jamaican. Yet Millie somehow belongs to neither place.

Other characters include ‘gully queen’ Hibiscus (Chyna McQueen), her brilliant partner on the Jamaican Police Force; Curtis (Gershwyn Eustache Jnr), who is forced to keep his love life secret from his colleagues; game-playing Scotland Yard Inspector Luke Holborn (Joe Dempsie); and Hit Girl (Dorothy ‘Patra’ Smith), go-go-club owner and underworld entrepreneur.

The series marks the screenwriting debut for Booker Prize award-winning author James, who is an executive producer with Jami O’Brien, Leopoldo Gout and Simon Maxwell for Motive Pictures.

Co-executive producers are Tanya Hamilton, who is also lead director, alongside Joshua St Johnston who also writes on the project. The writers are Theresa Ikoko and Lydia Adetunji and the directors are Annetta Laufer (two episodes) and Jean Luc Herbulot (one episode).
