Ones to Watch

DQ checks out the upcoming schedules to pick 10 new series to watch this October, from a British heist thriller set in Spain and a French true crime drama to a Swedish period mystery series and a horror from the world of Stephen King.

This heist thriller stars executive producer Jones and Whittaker as skilled confidence tricksters who’ve been separated by an arduous 10-year prison sentence. When Bert (Jones) is released from the Spanish prison cell she has called home for a decade, she convinces Sam (Whittaker) to pull off one final job.

Les Disparues de la Gare (The Lost Station Girls)

The latest French drama to launch on Disney+, this true crime series dramatises events that took place between 1995 and 2001 in the South of France after a teenage girl goes missing and three young women are found murdered near the train station in Perpignan. Flore Robin (Razat), a rookie detective, joins the police on the very day the first body is discovered. She is assigned to work with Captain Franck Vidal (Hugo Becker) and her mentor, Félix Sabueso. Meanwhile, the mother of the first missing girl never gives up hope of finding her daughter.

Hundertdreizehn

This series takes its inspiration from a German government statistic that says 113 people’s lives are forever impacted when a single person is killed in a traffic incident, among them family members, friends, colleagues, emergency workers and witnesses. Here, the story begins with a bus crash, leading each character in the six-part drama to confront its impact in a different way.

To Cook a Bear

Set in 19th century Sweden, this six-parter (also pictured top) is based on the novel by Mikael Niemis and marks the first Nordic original series from Disney+. When a new pastor (Skarsgård) and his family arrive in the isolated village of Kengis, bringing with him a strong belief in justice and change, he challenges the local elite but faces resistance as his fiery sermons ignite hope for a better life among the poor farmers. At the same time, the village is shaken by disappearances and frightening rumours of bear attacks. When the pastor and his Sámi foster son, Jussi, lead the search, they make a horrific discovery that creates deep rifts in the village’s fragile community.

From Luther creator Neil Cross comes this chase thriller that pits two brilliant minds against each other in a deadly game of hide and seek across Italy. When enigmatic genius Iris Nixon (Algar) cracks a string of complex online puzzles, she’s led to a piazza in Florence, where she meets charismatic entrepreneur Cameron Beck (Hollander). He invites her to work with him to unlock a powerful and top-secret piece of technology. Her curiosity piqued, she accepts. But when Iris discovers its dangerous potential, she steals the journal containing the device’s activation sequence – and vanishes.

A spin-off from long-running cop drama Blue Bloods, Boston Blue sees Wahlberg reprise his role as NYPD detective Danny Reagan, who takes a position with the Boston Police Department and is paired with fellow detective Lena Silver (Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law-enforcement family. As Reagan settles into his new city, he also hopes to reconnect with his younger son, Sean (Amonsen), who is beginning his own career in Boston.

Il Mostro (The Monster of Florence)

After premiering at the Venice Film Festival, this four-part series is now set to debut on Netflix. Based on true events, it explores the long and complex investigation into the first and most brutal serial killer in Italian history, involving eight double murders across 17 years – all carried out with the same weapon, a .22 calibre Beretta.

Anne Rice’s Talamasca: The Secret Order

The latest series in Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe (which also includes Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches), The Secret Order stars Denton as Guy Anatole. On the cusp of graduating law school, he is approached by a representative of the Talamasca, a secretive agency that monitors and protects humans from the supernatural world. He then falls headlong into a world of secret agents and immortal beings who, up to now, have maintained a fragile balance with the mortal world.

Developed for television by filmmakers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti (IT, IT Chapter Two) and Jason Fuchs (IT Chapter Two), this series is set in the world created by author Stephen King and established on screen in the two IT films. Serving as a prequel to those movies, it continues to revolve around Skarsgård’s evil supernatural being Pennywise, who appears in the form of a sinister clown.
